Entry Door Surrounds Can Add To Your Homes Curb Appeal

8/22/2013

Many entry doors throughout the Greater Cincinnati area were built with decorative door surrounds. These trim details are starting to show their wear, especially those that were built out of pine and poplar.

Today there are a wide variety of styles to choose from that are made from man-made products such as Fypon.
Picture
Fypon pieces have a closed cell structure that prevents water penetration and absorption. Each piece has a consistent quality and finish, which requires no additional priming or sealing. In fact, each piece is coated at their manufacturing location with a double-primed exterior grade ultraviolet stable coating. Once products are installed, they can be painted, stained and faux finished.

If you're searching for a product that resists rot, mildew, insects, warping and splintering, Then Fypon is the answer!

Take a look through their online catalog and see if a new surround could improve your homes curb appeal.

What Type Of Siding Is On My Home?

8/8/2013

Throughout the Greater Cincinnati area, there are many different types of wood siding. Which wood species is one question, but what profile of siding do you have?
Picture
Western Red Cedar bevel siding is the most widely-used siding type. It is produced by resawing lumber at an angle to produce two pieces thicker on one edge than the other. The manufacturing process results in pieces with one face saw textured. The other face is smooth or saw textured depending on the grade and customer preference. Bevel siding is installed horizontally and gives an attractive shadow line which varies with the thickness of siding selected.

Picture
Board-and-batten is a vertical design created using wide clear or knotty cedar boards spaced apart with narrower boards (battens) covering the joins. There are no set board or batten widths – various combinations are used to create different looks suitable for large or small scale applications. A frequent combination is 1″x3″ battens and 1″x10″ boards. This can also be reversed with boards installed over battens to create a deep channel effect.

Western Red Cedar tongue and groove is widely used for its good looks and versatility. It can be installed horizontally, vertically or diagonally, each method giving a distinctly different look. Tongue and groove siding is available with rough or smooth faces. Both seasoned (kiln-dried) and unseasoned (green) sidings are available.

The joints between adjoining pieces are usually v-shaped but flush jointed, reveal and radius joints are also available. The different joints and surface textures in tongue and groove siding combine to provide a range of shadow line effects that enhance the product’s versatility.

Channel siding is a popular type of lap siding and is used whenever a rustic appearance is desired. A versatile siding, it can be installed vertically, horizontally or diagonally. In channel siding the profile of each board partially overlaps that of the board next to it creating a channel that gives shadow line effects, provides excellent weather protection and allows for dimensional movement.

The information above may help you if you're ever in need of a siding repair on your home. Knowing what you have, can help you find the right expert for your project.

Is A Moisture Barrier Necessary Behind Siding?

8/1/2013

Picture
The key to any good siding job is preparing the sheathing before the siding is installed. All siding leaks, let me repeat that, all siding leaks. You must have the proper barrier behind the siding to fully protect your home.

Tyvek HouseWrap is probably the most popular brand used in the Cincinnati market today. It is important to note there is a difference in which product to use with your type of siding

Vinyl Siding:
Tyvek Housewrap delivers the optimum balance of properties for superior performance against the elements. Our house wraps help prevent outside water from entering the walls and help to seal the home to keep outside air where it belongs. Tyvek helps reduce homeowner energy bill because homes stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter and dry all year round.

Cedar or Cement Siding:
Tyvek DrainWrap is an engineered weather barrier that builds on the weather-resistive properties of Tyvek. It has vertical grooves on the surface to help channel bulk water while allowing water vapor to pass through the moisture barrier, which helps to promote drying in wall systems. DrainWrap is the product choice when enhanced drainage is desired behind claddings such as primed wood, fiber cement siding and foam board applied over flat substrates.

Before you start your siding project, make sure the proper preparations are being taken to ensure a quality job.
